The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) was created on December 1, 2006 replacing the Electoral Advisory Committee (EAC) that had been set up in 1979. The EAC has prepared the terrain for the foundation of the Commission which is currently an unbiased, self-sufficient, expert body which reports directly to Parliament. The goal of the Commission is to protect Jamaica’s democratic institutions particularly by ensuring access to free and fair universal suffrage for qualified voters, so that they can choose their governing representatives legally.
